SPRING SELF CARE

With summer around the corner what are you doing to get ready?

Most people focus on how to “look” their best for summer with “10-day ab” programs or “bikini body” regimens, but if you physically feel great, then your appearance will show that too! Let’s start getting you ready from the inside out!

stay hydrated...

Ever wonder why you feel so bloated whenever you drink just a small amount of water? Our bodies need a certain amount of water each day. If you consistently do not give it enough water, then it will hold on to that water because it is not sure when it will get more. If you start drinking plenty of water each day, your body will adapt and won’t hold on to that water anymore.

Hydration is important for just about every bodily and metabolic function, so if you start working out, but aren’t getting enough water you won’t see as much progress. If you start eating more fruits and vegetables but aren’t getting enough water, you will find yourself “backed up.” Staying hydrated will allow your body to function more efficiently and your skin to glow!

Have a hard time increasing water intake? Try to get in half your body weight in ounces! So, if you weigh 150lbs you should aim for 75oz per day. Try adding in some fruit or lemon juice for flavoring if that helps you!

be physically active...

I know that quarantine has become the time of “at home workouts” but I urge you to get outside while the weather is nice and go for a hike, walk on a beach, go for a light jog, or even take your workout outside! Get creative and bust out of that rut with something new! The fresh air and sun will make your workout that much easier. My favorite thing to do lately is to go for a run, then come back and jump in my brook in my backyard! Definitely a great cool down! You don’t need to be the fittest person on the beach this summer, you just need to feel good in your body. If you physically feel sluggish and unhealthy try adding in some more activity to your day, not for immediate weight loss but to jump start those endorphins and make you feel a more confident and capable.

eat fresh whole foods...

I always talk about the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle, but I know many of my readers are not plant based, but are focused on health! The summer is the time when most produce is fresh and blossoming. Take advantage of this by having fresh fruit every morning, a bright salad, or even a veggie packed dinner from your farmers market finds. There is nothing like a vibrant meal of plants that you grew yourself or just picked up from your local farm. There are so many nutritional benefits to increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables, from vitamins, to fiber, to antioxidant properties, and even a bit of hydration! Eating fresh foods instead of prepackaged or processed will 100% make you feel much lighter and healthier.

enlighten yourself...

With so much going on these days from our Corona Virus Quarantine to the Black Lives Matter Movement, there is so much to learn. Being uneducated in this time about what is going on around us is unhealthy for our society. Do a bit of research about pandemics and learn what you can do to protect yourself and those around you from COVID-19. Figure out a way to support the BLM movement in your area and spread the word about how others can help too. Do what you feel you need to do but not without learning as much as possible first. Feeling aware of what is going on around you will help lessen confusion, fear, and will allow you to feel more confident in decisions, and your stances on todays world.

take care of your body...

There is so much you can do for your body from the inside that I have already mentioned, but on the outside try some of these! Wash your face and moisturize! Dry skin will only get worse during a summer of beaches and sun. Clean your pillowcases weekly to keep your face and hair healthy and away from excess oils. Lay off the heat on your hair for a while and wear it natural! And most importantly WEAR SUNSCREEN! You can still get a tan with sunscreen on just without the wrinkles ten years down the road and potential for skin cancer. It is important to get some vitamin D, so 10-15 minutes in the sun each day without sunscreen is good! But after that lotion up and protect that skin!

drive less...

Why get in the car when you can walk with some friends (distanced of course) or bike with your significant other? Take this nice weather as a chance to leave the car at home and lighten up on the environment if possible. This is also a great way to get in some exercise.

lighten up your house...

This is actually one of my favorite ways to get ready for summer, brightening up my house! New white bedding, bright white and yellow flowers on the kitchen table, and opening all of the curtains for a sunlit house. Making your house feel open, airy, and light is the perfect way to make your home feel ready for summer. If you are lucky enough to have an outdoor area like a porch or deck enjoy meals outside, listen to the birds, pick fresh flowers for the table, and feel that warm breeze.

Let us all try to enjoy this summer by feeling confident, healthy, and educated!
